10 Reflective Studies is a beautiful collection of technical studies for classical guitar composed by Stefano Vivaldini. I had the privilege of participating in this project during my Master's degree in Brussels, where five students each recorded two studies from the collection. It was a deeply meaningful experience—not just as a recording project, but as a journey of musical and personal growth.
In Stefano's words: "Each piece in this collection delves deep into a specific technical aspect of the instrument, providing both a challenge and a chance for reflection. From scales to arpeggios, these studies will push you to new heights and leave you with a deeper understanding of the guitar. This is not just a book of music scores, but a journey of self-discovery for any musician."
These words perfectly capture what this project meant to all of us involved. It wasn't simply about executing technical exercises; it was about exploring ourselves through the instrument, discovering new possibilities, and growing as complete musicians.
For this project, I recorded two contrasting studies that showcase different facets of both technique and musical expression:
"Indefinite Dance" is a rhythmically engaging and technically demanding piece that explores the guitar's capacity for rhythmic complexity and dynamic movement. The title itself suggests something fluid and unpredictable—a dance that shifts and evolves, never quite settling into a predictable pattern. This study challenges the performer to maintain clarity and precision while navigating intricate rhythmic figures and keeping the musical line alive and dancing.
In beautiful contrast, "Serenade of the Sea" is deeply romantic and tender—a study that focuses on melodic expression, tonal beauty, and the guitar's singing quality. This piece evokes the gentle motion of waves, the vastness of the ocean, and the intimate moments of reflection that the sea inspires. It's a study that demands sensitivity, control of dynamics, and the ability to sustain a lyrical line while managing accompanying voices.
Together, these two studies represent different poles of guitar playing: the rhythmic vitality of the dance and the lyrical sweetness of the serenade. Both pushed me to grow technically while inviting deep musical reflection.
Working on these studies during my time in Brussels was transformative. Each practice session became an opportunity not just to improve technique, but to understand myself better as a musician. Stefano's compositions have a way of revealing what needs work, what comes naturally, and where emotional connection can elevate technical mastery into genuine artistry.
Being part of this collaborative recording project with fellow students created a sense of community and shared purpose. We were all on our own individual journeys, yet united by these beautiful studies and the growth they inspired in each of us.
Experience one of my earliest video collaborations with Stefano—my performance of Study No. 5 "Indefinite Dance"—where you can hear the rhythmic energy and technical precision this piece demands.
